For making the most of the space available to you, always empty your trash folder. The trash folder will not empty automatically and hence you will have empty it manually to free up space.
Identify large files
Find the largest files on your Google drive, that may not need in the future and move them to the trash. Go to https://drive.google.com/#quota and don’t forget to empty the trash after moving the files.
Find large attachments in Gmail
In Gmail search box, type size:20mb and find out all the attachments which have a file size of more than 20mb. You can change the file size as per your individual preferences. Deleting bigger attachments, that are not needed any longer will help you manage Google drive space effectively.
Check your storage status
Check your storage status through your online app as well as your Google account. If you are unable to check your storage status in Google drive space for any reason, use myaccount.google.com/intro/preferences#storage

To reduce your storage space of photos, check https://photos.google.com/settings and click “High Quality”. By clicking “High Quality” you will allow Google to reduce storage space for your photos.
You can do the same in your mobile app also by clicking the three-line menu in the upper left side of the app. Then go to the settings, and click Backup & Sync. Find out the “upload size” and then select “High Quality (Free Unlimited Storage)”.

Google doesn’t count the size of files which are in native formats. Go to https://drive.google.com, choose “settings”, and then check the “Convert uploaded files to Google Docs editor format”.
